Working in partnership with the Minstry of Defence at Devonport, Babcock provides through-life support for submarines, surface ships and associated systems and equipment as part of our continuing commitment to support our nation’s naval capability.

Devonport is the UK’s sole refitting and defuelling site for nuclear-powered submarines and has modern facilities for both Trafalgar and Vanguard-Class submarines. In addition to major refuelling refits, which take place approximately every seven years of a submarine’s operational life and take 2-3 years to complete, submarines are taken out of service for interim servicing and maintenance programmes.

In addition to our work on submarines, we are responsible for maintaining, refitting, converting and modernising sophisticated modern surface warships, such as frigates, aircraft carriers, amphibious ships, fleet tankers and survey vessels. We are also responsible for the removal, overhaul and reinstallation of equipment from vessels- such as weapon systems- at our on-site workshops.

As well as planned refit and modernisation projects, we undertake engineering work on Devonport-based ships. Ships visiting Devonport, for example, during operational sea training or exercises, are also serviced. The work includes dockings, planned maintenance and operational defect repairs, as well as the integration of new systems and equipment to upgrade a ship or submarine’s operational capability.

A rapid reaction team based on site is available to deal with issues that arise on operational warships anywhere in the world.

We have a large design and technology capability providing a wide range of support activities including feasibility and project definition studies, detail design and draughting, development trials, noise and vibration analysis, structural analysis, project management, integrated logistic support and risk management. Babcock also provides a logistics distribution service, acting as the 'hub' for all defence material movements in the South-West region and operates a number of contracts for the provision of equipment and spares for Royal Navy ships and submarines.
