Babcock’s Apprenticeship Programme is part funded by the European Union through the European Social Fund (ESF). ESF supports activities to extend employment opportunities and develop a skilled work force.

There are currently over 200 different sector apprenticeship frameworks and standards across the UK, each including the delivery of a range of qualifications and covering most occupations and sectors.

Babcock offer apprenticeships at the following levels:

Level 2 – Equivalent to Intermediate GNVQ or 4 - 5 GCSE passes, these provide the skills an employee needs for their chosen career and provide a good platform for progresson onto to a Level 3.

Level 3  – Equivalent to 2 A level passes,  this level develops first line management skills and/or advanced technical skills.

Level 4 and Level 5  – Equivalent to higher education certificate, higher education diploma or a foundation degree, these qualifications develop advanced level skills, often linked to sector specific management skills.

Some differences in terms of funding provided and training required exist in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but many of the core features of the apprenticeship model remain the same across the four nations.  In the majority of cases, an apprenticeship consists of:

  • Standards – New Apprenticeship Standards are replacing Frameworks in England. Developed by groups of employers they align apprenticeships more closely to job roles detailing the skills, behaviours and knowledge required to be competent in that role.

  • Framework Diplomas (often referred to as NVQs, or SVQs in Scotland) are national awards based on competence, achieved through teaching, learning and assessment in the work place. They are highly regarded by employers as they demonstrate learners have the knowledge, experience and skills required to perform in the workplace at a range of different levels.
  • Maths and English qualifications which are known as Functional Skills in England, Essential Skills in Northern Ireland and Wales and Core Skills in Scotland. In all countries, the delivery of Maths and English is designed to develop the practical skills required in everyday life, education and the workplace. For some frameworks ICT is also included.
  • Frameworks may also include a technical certificate which provides extra knowledge and understanding about each job role.
  • ERR – Employee Rights and Responsibilities. In this part of the framework, apprentices learn about their rights and responsibilities in the workplace.
  • PLTS – Personal Learning and Thinking Skills. As part of an apprenticeship framework participants will develop a series of underpinning skills that are key for everyday life. These include creative thinking, evaluation and team working, all of which are key to future employability and becoming effective employees.
