Ships and submarines

Internationally, Babcock define, design and support a wide range of vessels, from naval ships and submarines, to offshore support vessels in gas shipping, commercial ships and luxury yachts. We undertake ship conversions, life extensions and major repairs, while offering dedicated services on the water. We are also a key service partner to navies, including those in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, Korea, Spain and the United Kingdom.

In Australia, we bring together engineering, design, systems integration and platform management capabilities to partner with ASC in the sustainment of the Collins Class submarines. Together, we make sure that they are operationally ready, and sustainable, with our expertise in complex and critical fleet management. We design and support key systems for the Collins Class submarines including the Weapons Launch System, Weapons Handling System and Submerged Signal Ejectors at our engineering and maintenance facilities located in South Australia and Western Australia.

Naval Ship Management (Australia) Pty Ltd, is a Babcock - UGL Ltd joint venture. NSM delivers long term maintenance planning and scheduling services to the ANZAC Class frigates on the East and West coasts of Australia.  

In New Zealand, our world-class maritime engineering and support facilities are used to provide maintenance, repair and overhaul to the Royal New Zealand Navy via the Maritime Engineering Support Team (MEST). This unique partnership, between Babcock (NZ) Ltd and the Royal New Zealand Navy Logistics Command (Maritime), delivers a cost effective, through life management program to Navy.


Babcock provides equipment to navies, including those in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Korea, Spain and Canada. Our world-class design capabilities are compleĀ­mented by an excellence in equipment management and through-life support.

Our engineers have broad capabilities supĀ­porting our own specialised marine systems and those of other equipment manufacturers. Babcock equipment can be found on submarines and surface ships and include weapon handling systems, weapons and countermeasure launching systems, remote communications systems and submarine life raft deployment systems, high integrity pumps and integrated waste management systems.

Naval base management

Babcock is an experienced port operator, delivering engineering support, supply chain capability, training and management services to a diverse customer base. We specialise in large, complex contracts, delivering the bespoke requirements of our customers.

We own and operate ports across the globe including Devonport in New Zealand, Devonport and Appledore in England, and Rosyth and Faslane in Scotland.

In New Zealand, we operate the largest marine engineering and naval repair facility in the country, providing through life support, custom design and retrofit, ship repair and marine engineering services for super yachts, cruise ships, research vessels and cargo ships, as well as the Royal New Zealand Navy’s surface fleet of ships.
