Fire Training Cardiff Gate
Purpose-built training for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service
Building the Cardiff Gate Training and Development Centre was the first step in delivering long-term training excellence for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS).
Meeting ongoing training needs for emergency services
SWFRS needed an experienced training partner that could design, develop and deliver a fit-for-purpose training centre that would give SWFRS the flexibility to meet a wide range of training needs.
The centre had to be in an accessible location, adaptable to future needs and capable of providing fire and rescue training alongside other emergency services training and facilities for the private sector.
Most of the training would be given by SWFRS trainers, with Babcock offering further support, particularly for any third party income generation.
Fully equipped for a range of scenarios
In 2005, we managed a £70 million Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract to build, operate and maintain the new training centre over a 25-year period.
The centre is designed to fully meet the needs of SWFRS and external organisations, delivering a portfolio of more than 60 cutting-edge training courses.
These cover bespoke fire, rescue, management, and health and safety training, as well as offering a wide range of facilities for meetings, conferences and lectures from two fully-equipped theatres.
The Cardiff Gate facilities include:
- state-of-the-art Incident Command training suite
- functional training ground for standard drills and more complex scenarios
- dedicated area for complex road traffic collision training
- brick house for domestic fire training scenarios
- industrial unit with a multi-floor industrial fire training environment
- fully functional passenger lift to simulate high rise rescues up to 12 floors
- multi-purpose rope rescue platform for Safe Working at Height activities
- confined space training tunnel
There are also two air-conditioned lecture rooms with modern projection and sound systems.
The partnership is supported through the Joint Management Board, where representatives from the Fire Service and Babcock work together to deliver on the Key Performance Indicators, resolve issues and share best practice.
Continually adding value
Our commitment to ongoing investment in the training centre means it’s suitable for training both now and in the future.
We continue to add further value to the partnership through greater training flexibility, delivering training where needed at our other training centres and helping to save time and money for emergency services.
