World class search and rescue: SASEMAR

World class search and rescue: SASEMAR

This maritime search and rescue contract in Spain delivers vital search and rescue missions on behalf of SASEMAR (the Spanish Maritime Safety Agency). As part of the contract, Babcock crew the aircraft, deliver the search and rescue operations, maintain and manage the mission-specific equipment on board and service the bespoke search and rescue aircraft.

We respond to drifting ships, emergency medical situations in maritime locations, distress calls from oil platforms, environmental spillages, border control issues and many more maritime situations. To ensure we can deliver this wide variety of missions, we have developed specialist training to cater to the hostile environments in which most of the SASEMAR missions take place (harsh weather conditions at sea and inaccessible coastlines). The demanding curriculum gives our crews the best training which we’re proud to say results in Babcock’s ability to deliver the highest quality of service.

Using a specialist fleet of AW139, CN235 and Airbus EC225 aircraft that we have specially configured and modified for these search and rescue missions, we are able to locate people and vessels in distress more easily and deploy the best aircraft to assist them.

We’re very proud of our teams who have rescued and evacuated more than 7,000 people as part of the SASEMAR contract in 2019. From providing medical evacuations to cargo ships sailing in 14 metre waves with strong winds to rescuing surfers stranded at the base of dangerous, rocky cliffs, no one day is the same. Our expertise and experience in these search and rescue operations means we’re able to provide SASEMAR with a world-class emergency service, responding to the complicated life-or-death situations that often arise at sea.

Our long-term partnership with SASEMAR has delivered significant mission critical and environmental benefits. Our expertise and commitment to safe practice has helped save countless lives and we are proud that SASEMAR continue to trust us to deliver.
