Babcock Defence Systems Technology (DST) provides engineering and technology services for a range of government bodies and private sector customers in the UK and internationally. We work with both the UK Navy and other international Defence organisations to keep our armed forces at sea to ensure the world is a safer place. Essential to our success is our Finance function, which ensures the continued smooth running of our business by providing insight and analysis of the company’s performance and driving the ownership of its financial obligations at all levels of the business.
If you are great with numbers and would like a career in accountancy, our Level 3 Assistant Accountancy apprenticeship could be for you. As part of our apprenticeship you will earn a very competitive salary, be provided with a solid grounding in all aspects of accountancy and study for a professional qualification with the aim of progressing you through to a permanent accountancy role within DST.
We are looking for forward thinking, can-do individuals who can work collaboratively with both finance and non-finance employees to bring finance to life and to make a positive impact on a projects success. As part of the 2 year apprenticeship you will be immersed within our varied programme teams and work in 6 month placements across 4 key business areas looking after and supporting finance admin, project accounting, central finance and bidding.
Depending on the placement, a typical days’ work may include invoicing, reviewing and assessing the financial impact of schedules, budgeting, forecasting, treasury, cash receipts and payments and financial reporting. In the first 18 months of the apprenticeship you will attend South Gloucester and Stroud College (SGS) on weekly day release where you will study towards your AAT qualification. In the last six months of the apprenticeship you will work in a ‘Responsible Position’ in the area of the business you would like to continue your career.
Supporting you in your first year will be a buddy who will help you settle into the business. Throughout your apprenticeship you will also be supported by a mentor who will be senior member of our Finance function.
The apprenticeship will be primarily based at our two Bristol locations: Ashton Vale Road and Bristol Business Park. However, there will be the opportunity to work at our Devonport site.
Further education opportunities will be available to continue your development as we encourage our employees to achieve Chartered status with a Professional Body such as Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) or the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
