Mechanical Apprentice

My favourite part of the job:

As well as being able to push myself at work and increase my engineering know-how, I enjoy visiting schools, colleges and events to tell people about what a Babcock apprenticeship offers.

Most challenging thing I’ve ever done:

Overhauling a gas turbine on HMS Monmouth has definitely been my biggest challenge so far. A highly important piece of equipment, I needed to use my specialist knowledge to do the work.

My typical day:

I’m in my third year as a Mechanical Apprentice at Babcock. So far I’ve completed an NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations and a City and Guilds Technical Certificate Level 2, as well as getting lots of hands-on experience.

I combine my studies with work placements at Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth, so no two days are the same.

I usually start with a quick catch-up with my manager to find out what’s in store for the day. Today I’m working on a Type 23 gas turbine, but it’s really varied.

Working alongside experienced mechanical fitters has helped me learn so much. It’s given me new skills that I can put into practice on a daily basis.

My manager reviews my work, giving me valuable feedback. Then it’s time for lunch before I work on my NVQ portfolio, to help me towards further qualifications.
