Babcock Australasia trusted to deliver to Australia’s Oil and Gas sector
In 2019, Babcock Australasia was awarded a five-year contract to provide offshore aviation services to one of Australia’s leading energy suppliers – Santos. The contract brought two AW139 aircraft to Australasia and led to the opening of a new dedicated hangar in Karratha, Western Australia.
The aircraft, relocated from Babcock’s UK Offshore operations, undertook a significant modification program prior to entering into service for Santos. This included modifying the aircraft to include HF Radio, full search and rescue capability and numerous O&G specific requirements.
“To complete such a significant modification program in only five months is quite an achievement,” said Rod Johnson, Head of Engineering for Australia’s Offshore Aviation business.
Another key aspect of the contract implementation was to build a facility in Karratha from which all operations and maintenance would be performed. The state-of-the-art 1,400m2 facility supports the operation, storage and maintenance of the two AW139 helicopters, with on-site facilities providing passenger processing, security screening and working amenities.
The helicopter operations are being used primarily for crew changes at offshore Santos sites and also provide emergency support and 24/7 medical evacuation services. The contract also created new jobs for crew and management who are now based in the local community.
“We’re excited to be working in partnership with Santos in Karratha and we thank the City of Karratha for their unfailing support in establishing our operations there,” said David Ruff, CEO, Babcock Australasia.
“Our partnership with Santos guarantees further growth and investment in our workforce both in Karratha and across Australia, cementing Babcock’s position as Australia’s leading provider of critical aviation services to the Oil and Gas sector.”
In 2018, Babcock Australasia’s Offshore Aviation business received an Asia Pacific Supplier Recognition award and continues to set a benchmark for aviation safety, customer responsiveness and operational reliability in Australia’s offshore Oil and Gas sector.
Brett Darley, Executive Vice President Offshore at Santos congratulated Babcock on the opening of the hangar at Karratha, recognising the importance of the partnership.
“This aviation hub is playing a critical role in the safe, effective and efficient operation of our activities in the west,” he said.
Santos is the biggest producer of domestic gas in Western Australia, delivering natural gas that powers industries, schools and hospitals not only in the west of the country, but throughout Australia.
The contract adds to Babcock’s steadily growing offshore aviation blue chip client base that includes ConocoPhillips Australia, Chevron, Jadestone Energy, ENI Australia and Woodside Energy Ltd.
