Infrastructure investments and services supported

In 2019 Babcock opened a new office on Bristol Business Park replacing existing Bristol offices, Building 100 and Aztec West. Before the site was built, an access road was constructed behind the existing offices providing a new route to the main entrance. Existing trees were protected to incorporate them into the new development.

The Phase 2 development is underway and is due for completion during February 2023. It constitutes a total office development of 132,136 sq. ft NIA and a 740 space 3 storey decked car park at a CAT A development cost of £41.6m. This will support the Babcock Naval Nuclear, Land and Marine Businesses.

It is envisaged the new development will act as an employment catalyst for the support Babcock businesses. There are also two small retail units totalling 6,650 sq. ft NIA on the ground floor of one of the buildings, which will provide further beneficial amenity for the augmented Babcock campus and the wider Business Park.

The investment is a commercial Development Agreement for Lease.

Babcock has a diverse array of indirect economic impacts associated with our community engagement, such as volunteering, corporate sponsorships and university partnerships.

In the UK we are proud to be a major employer of service leavers, veterans and reserves and have in excess of 5,000 veterans in the UK workforce. In 2020 we enhanced our focus on Service Leaver and Veterans hires and recruited 164 declared service leavers and 380 veterans (total 544) representing circa 20% of our total UK hire for 2020. We recruited over 200 apprentices onto our apprenticeship programmes during the year. The majority of these were new starters on level two and three programmes, which create entry level opportunities to join the workforce. In addition we recruited over 250 graduates onto our graduate development programme this year, our largest intake to date. Babcock encourage our employees to become STEM Ambassadors so they can support our schools engagement programme. In the UK this year we have trained over 200 STEM Ambassadors, bringing our total across the business to over 700 active Ambassadors. We are also proud that two of our employees have been awarded the prestigious British Empire Medal (BEM) for the important role that they played during the COVID19 pandemic.

We also have an international impact for example, in Australia we are focused on female STEM programmes and Submarine in school programmes, as well as engaging with organisations targeted towards indigenous peoples and are focusing on expanding our indigenous supply chain. Many of our employees also acted as volunteers in the bush fire rescue services. In Canada we are in year two of the Progressive Aboriginal Relations Certification through the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business and are focused on expanding the supply chain and have recently invested $1m in an indigenous owned business based in Victoria, British Columbia. Employees have also volunteered to support local homeless shelters. In South Africa we supported “adopt a school“, donated computers and provided maintenance.
