What is your current role?
Mechanic Apprentice
What GCSE’s did you take at school?
Math, English, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, BTEC Sports, Catering and Religious Studies
What were you interested in growing up and did this impact your choice in becoming an apprentice/graduate?
At school I enjoyed playing football, rugby & cricket. I also enjoyed being outside and exploring with friends. I would always help my Dad with DIY and mechanics. I have always preferred being active and engaging with hands on work, which is why an apprenticeship appealed to me. I have just come to the end of my apprenticeship with Babcock, and I am continuing on to do a HNC in Electronics in September, so as I have gone through the apprenticeship, I have appreciated the theory side as well as the practical.
What’s your favourite thing about working for Babcock?
How varied the work can be in my current role – each day is different.
Where do you want to take your career within Babcock?
I have an aspiration to reach Chartered status and would like to manage engineering projects in the future. Until then, I will build on my work experience in my current role increasing competency.
What would your advice be to school students choosing GCSEs and thinking of options for the future?
Always be open minded about what options there are after school, you aren’t limited to what you can do; whether it is a job, an apprenticeship or University. I have spoken to a lot of people who have been to University because that was the norm and they hadn’t known about other opportunities. If you are unsure of what to pursue as a career, remember you are still young and have plenty of time to find your dream job.
