Babcock recognises that in order to be able to meet the challenges of the future and excel in the wide range of operating sectors we occupy, we need to be developing the next generation of digital professionals who can innovate using new and existing technologies to tackle these challenges head on. 

The new Digital and Technology Solutions (DATS) degree apprenticeship programme has been developed by Babcock and the University of the West of England (UWE) in association with University Centre Weston (UCW) to combine the very best of the Institute of Engineering and Technology accredited Babcock graduate scheme and our Higher Engineering apprenticeship programme. 

The Scheme is split into two specialisms – Data Analyst and Digital Engineering (available schemes are Cyber, Software and Network Engineering).  

Data Analyst

Babcock is an advanced user of information and data analytics. How we use data is pivotal to our future business success.

Through the use of data we provide information and decision making support at the point of need enabling the most critical parts of our business to support our customers in making decisions that count.

As part of the apprenticeship you will get real life experience of working in:

  • Mathematical modelling and simulation
  • statistical analysis
  • predictive analysis
  • data visualisation
  • information related technology development

Digital Engineering

Over the course of the 5 year programme you will gain extensive experience in an engineering company, working in modern design offices and also within practical lab environments, test and integration facilities and manufacturing workshops.

Placements during the programme could include Submarine Systems, Surface Ships, Communications and Security, Command and Control and Electric Warfare.

Prior to the start of the 3rd year of the scheme apprentices specialising in this stream will, depending on aptitude and business needs, further refine their specialism into one of three areas: Cyber, software or Network Engineering.

Overall Scheme Structure

Whilst the scheme is predominantly based in Bristol you will be encouraged and supported to undertake off-site placements at some of our other business units around the UK.

For the first four years you will attend college on a day release basis, with assessments taking place in the workplace. For years 1 and 2 you will complete a range of modules aimed at providing you with a solid basis in the digital environment. For years 3 and 4, the programme will split into one of two chosen specialism: Data Analyst or Digital Engineering (Cyber Engineering, Software Engineering or Network Engineering). At this point your placements and degree will mirror your specialism.

In year 5 you will enter your ‘Responsible Position’ in an area of the business you want to specialise in and at the end of the year will end up as either a Data Analyst or Engineer depending on your specialism.  

Entry Requirements

To apply apprentices will ideally already have three A levels at grade B or above, preferably in related subjects such as Maths, Science and IT, or a BTEC Extended Diploma at MMM, or other qualifications equivalent to 96 UCAS tariff points, in addition to GCSE at grade C/4 and above in English and Maths.

Applications from those who do not meet these requirements but who have demonstrable and relevant work experience will be considered on an individual basis, subject to completing a programming assessment set by UCW.

Due to the funded nature of this programme, applicants with undergraduate degrees in Computing/IT/Electronics Engineering will not be eligible.  

You will be asked to state your preference as to specialism at the application stage.
