Metropolitan Police Service Training

Supporting the next generation of police officers

We provide training and related services that help organisations meet their current and future workforce needs.

As the learning partner of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), Babcock has worked with MPS to develop three entry routes (under the Police Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF)), to deliver training to new officers joining the service.

Working with a consortium of four London based universities, Anglia Ruskin University, Brunel University London, University of East London and University of West London, Babcock and MPS have developed a tailored programme that is now preparing the next generation of police officers for duty.

The programme delivers a curriculum set by the College of Policing and provides new recruits with the knowledge and skills that police officers must demonstrate every day to do their roles.

At a glance:

  • Eight year contract
  • Working in collaboration with MPS and four London universities
  • Delivering the Police Education Qualification Framework (PEQF) new recruit programmes
  • Recruiting and training lecturers with experience in policing

A fully accredited training model

Working collaboratively with our university partners and the MPS we have created a programme that complies with the police educational pathways set out by the College of Policing.

The PEQF programmes are independently accredited, more formally recognising the level police officers operate at every day, supporting the drive for policing to be seen as a profession, and providing the opportunity for new recruits to ‘earn while they learn’.

The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship awards recruits a BSc (Hons) in Professional Policing Practice upon successfully completing all elements of the programme.  While the Degree-Holders Entry Programme, which also includes a detective route, is for those already holding a degree, and awards a Graduate Diploma in Professional Policing Practice.

Guaranteeing quality teaching

We ensure the successful delivery of our courses by hiring and training lecturers that use their experience to guide and mentor students on their journey to becoming fully fledged police officers.

Since 2021, we’ve employed over 80 lecturers with policing experience to deliver highly engaging lecturer led lessons, role-plays and practical sessions to the next generation of police recruits.

We ensure all our lecturers are provided with the training they need to become a qualified lecturer. During the training we provide in-depth practical support from experts in the field, as well as funding a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education for lecturers that don’t already have the qualification.

Support progression throughout the programme

To support the recruits throughout either 2- or 3-year programmes, we have a team of 38 Progression and Development Coaches (PDCs).  These PDCs used their policing expertise to guide and support recruits, tackling any issues or challenges they face.

MPS training in numbers:

  • Over the first two years of the contract we:
  • Welcomed over 5800 recruits onto one of our career pathways
  • 2461 officers have successfully achieved Independent Patrol Status (a key milestone for the new recruits)
  • Over 80 lecturers employed
  • Over 38 Progression and Development Coaches employed
  • Carried out over 21,000 progress reviews via our Progression and Development Team Marked over 25,000 assessments
