National Engineering Day

Today, we’re celebrating National Engineering Day. The event, run by the Royal Academy of Engineering, aims to raise awareness around the crucial role that engineers and engineering play in solving some of the biggest world challenges we face, from climate change to defence solutions and healthcare. 

This year’s theme focuses on engineers across the country who are working on projects and products that are improving lives. Across Babcock our engineers are working to create a more sustainable future by integrating environmental sustainability wherever they can – from programme design to reusing and recycling our resources.

Driven by our purpose to create a safe and secure world, we’re committed to reducing emissions and working towards Net Zero. In September, we signed an agreement with engine experts, Cosworth, to explore hybrid propulsion in military vehicles. We’ll be working together to deliver the battery technology to convert fuel to electricity, allowing us to continue our development of the next generation of military hybrid vehicles.

We’ve also been working with the RAF’s Rapid Capability Office, as it takes another significant step towards a sustainable aviation future. Project MONET is set to progress the application of a range of sustainable aviation technologies, including the potential for synthetic fuelled internal combustion engines, and hybrid.

As part of Project MONET, in partnership with UK-based SMEs: CFS Aero, Zero Petroleum, Delta Cosworth and Uplift 360, our engineers are exploring emerging technologies that could minimise the environmental impact of light aircraft flying training.

Our engineers understand the importance of collaborating with industry stakeholders to tackle common environmental challenges. Another way they’ve been striving to do this is by leading the Clean Maritime SME Group. The group is made up of engineers from across the industry and is an engineering focal point for the design, integration and support of clean maritime technologies that support our customers to meet their emission reduction and net zero targets and obligations.

Neil Young, Group Engineering Director, said today: “In my role, you meet inspiring engineers on a daily basis, whether that’s tackling climate change through Net Zero solutions or supporting the delivery of the Type 31 frigates for Royal Navy.

“Over the coming year, we’ll be looking to work with organisations like Engineering UK and our engineering institutions, to help raise the profile of engineering and some of the incredible work we do.”
