With over 70 years’ experience of supporting military flying training, Babcock delivers equipment maintenance and support using our own fleet of Grob Tutor aircraft as well as the RAF-owned Tucano, Hawk and Sea King Search and Rescue Helicopter fleets. In total, we are responsible for supporting over 25% of all MoD rotary and fixed wing aircraft.
Our Air business employs approximately 1,700 people delivering our equipment support and military training capabilities across over 30 sites in the UK.
Through the delivery of a wide range of maintenance and support services, Babcock plays an integral role in support of the UK’s current military flying training system. Our capabilities cover aircraft maintenance, aircraft line and base operations, equipment maintenance and airfield support services and were delivered in support of over 80,000 flying hours last year. Looking forward, we are a 50% shareholder (with Lockheed Martin) in the Ascent Joint Venture which is responsible for delivering and supporting future UK flying training under the United Kingdom Military Flying Training System (UKMFTS) programme.
Babcock also plays a key role in the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) programme. Having already delivered the new Main Operating Base facility, we are now providing support to the communications and information systems we delivered and will do so for the remaining 23 years of the through-life service delivery phase of the project.
Babcock’s experience, along with our considerable footprint supporting the RAF, has enabled us to provide a value-add service to our customer. This is illustrated by:
Our innovative approach to maintenance scheduling through task sequencing, alignment of trade tasks and the subsequent elimination of duplication resulting in a reduction in depth maintenance time of 33%
Our delivery of additional support services which includes selecting, maintaining, servicing, painting and sponsoring the RAF’s display aircraft, thereby ensuring a safe, flexible and cost effective solution to underpin display seasons
Our role as a seamless integrator of aircraft, engineering, supply chain, airfield services and pilot training and our proven pedigree in the management of Total Safety
Babcock plays a key role in support of the MoD’s Flying Training at the Elementary, Basic and Advanced stages. We are now also supporting the first training packages in the RAF’s Advanced Jet Training and Rear Crew Training under the UKMFTS programme.
At RNAS Yeovilton Babcock maintains and operates two simulators used for Aircraft and Fighter Controller training for the Royal Navy, Royal Fleet Auxiliary and overseas Navies. The simulators allow students to conduct basic training scenarios and then move on to more complex operational exercises, working in a realistic Operations Room environment. As well as maintaining the simulators the highly trained Babcock team leads the training exercises.
In addition to our core capabilities, Babcock delivers airfield support services encompassing a range of logistical, airfield and support activities.
