Nuclear programmes at Rosyth

Your nuclear future at Rosyth

If you’re looking to be part of something truly pioneering, Rosyth is where innovation meets impact. We’re leading the UK’s first full dismantling and disposal of a nuclear-powered submarine – HMS Swiftsure – setting the benchmark for safe, sustainable submarine decommissioning. With options being explored to support future submarine maintenance, you could be part of a team that helps to make cutting-edge work a reality.

Growth, stability and innovation

The nuclear industry is going through its largest expansion in seventy years, and Babcock is right at the heart of it. Whether it’s the construction, waste management or decommissioning of civil nuclear power stations through our Cavendish Nuclear business or supporting the UK’s Continuous At Sea deterrent as part of our Nuclear Sector – we’re using our deep engineering expertise and strategically placed facilities to play a vital role in that growth.

A key part of that growth is our Rosyth team. Here we can offer engineering, safety and project management specialists the chance to apply their skills in nationally important work that helps to protect the security and wellbeing of people, the environment and future generations.

Submarine decommissioning

Rosyth is home to seven retired Royal Navy submarines and this year we commenced the dismantling of HMS Swiftsure as part of a pilot project, which is due to complete in 2026. This is the first UK nuclear-powered submarine to be fully disposed of, with 90% of the structure and components to be reused or recycled. With our specially designed state-of-the-art active waste management in-dock facility, this project is the first step towards a potential ongoing submarine disposal site in Rosyth.

Dreadnought Contingent Dock Facility

We were recently awarded a £7 million enabling contract to start the design work on a contingent dock facility at the Dockyard. Once built, the facility, will provide critical support to the new HMS Dreadnought submarine, should it be required during her sea trial period.

Meet our people

“I was looking for an inclusive, challenging but rewarding project, and the submarine dismantling work has met this. The work is intellectually challenging and whilst we have ambitious delivery targets, the team is aligned to support this. The nuclear industry has a reputation of slower delivery than other industries, however, Babcock challenges this, and what we have achieved in the last few years is astounding.”

“What I find most enjoyable about my job is being able to learn hands-on from experienced colleagues while also working on real complex projects that have a clear and purposefully impact. I find it interesting that each day brings new challenges, whether that’s developing technical skills or working as part of a multi-disciplined team.”

“Working on the Contingency Docking Facility has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Supporting the MOD and contributing to the infrastructure that underpins the Continuous At Sea Deterrent operation gives me a strong sense of pride and purpose. Knowing that our work plays a vital role in maintaining national security makes me feel valued and fulfilled every day.”
