Business Controls Manager

Name: Samantha

Location: Leicester

Sector: Nuclear

Meet Samantha, who started her career in management accounts to utilise her analytical skills. After regularly moving companies and feeling she’d outgrown her previous role, she was looking for somewhere that she could thrive – that’s when she found her place at Babcock.

“It was a big change for me to move from small, local businesses to such a large organisation, but I decided to give it a go. I realised quite quickly that the particular role was not the right fit for me and had decided to look again for other roles externally, but then after discussions with a few colleagues, we managed to arrange a change in role to cost engineering. The business supported the position change for me, and the associated training needed to allow my career in project controls to grow – I have now been with the business for over 11 years.”

No matter what your experience, your skills are transferable to the world of nuclear

As a people business, we know it’s all about having the right people, with the right skills, in the right place. Whether you have worked in the defence sector or not, we will support you, develop you, and equip you with what you need to contribute to our mission.

Now a Business Controls Manager, part of Samantha’s role is to ensure the correct steps and governance have been taken throughout the lifecycle of our projects, allowing time to pause and reflect on what and how are we doing things.

“I have learned so much about nuclear power generation, the clean-up of legacy facilities and the protection of our nation. I find it an incredibly interesting sector and working in project management enables you to be on the front line of specific elements of this work.

“As a non-engineer, I don’t understand the technical challenges that we face in delivering projects to our clients, but the people that I work with are all incredibly patient and understanding and will break down the topics in a way that I am able to understand, interpret and challenge in the context of my role. A questioning attitude is a useful skill in project controls.”
