Commissioning engineering
Commissioning is the discipline responsible for bringing an asset, facility or plant into full and safe working condition following construction or major engineering activity.
Our Commissioning Engineers play a crucial role in this process. They provide independent assurance of design, construction, installation and repair work; verify that functional and performance requirements have been met; and carry out validation activities to ensure the final solution is ready for operational use by our customers.
This is a role where your academic knowledge and practical engineering skills come together. You’ll apply a structured set of engineering techniques and procedures to check, inspect and test every operational component — from individual instruments and equipment through to modules, subsystems and fully integrated systems. These skills are applied not only to new-build projects, but also to existing assets undergoing expansion, renovation or major upgrades.
Our Commissioning Engineers work in a wide range of environments. Many operate in dockyards on complex naval platforms such as submarines and frigates, while others apply their expertise across our wider business — including Cavendish Nuclear and our satellite communications and Space sectors. Commissioning spans multiple engineering disciplines, including (but not limited to) Mechanical, Electrical, Marine/Naval, Digital and Construction. If you have a keen eye for detail, enjoy solving complex problems, and want to work on some of our most innovative and long‑term programmes, this could be the ideal path for you.
