High Level Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering, Submarines Commissioning Group

Name: Harry

Location: Devonport

Sector: Nuclear

As part of the High Level Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering within our Submarines Commissioning Group, Harry was exposed to real-world mechanical systems that needed precise installation, calibration, and testing from day one. While working on the final stages of a SSBN refit project, he quickly realised just how critical the commissioning process is in ensuring everything functions as designed.

“This hands-on experience has been invaluable, allowing me to directly apply theoretical knowledge from my studies — areas like fluid mechanics and thermodynamics— to the practical work of testing and fine-tuning systems to meet performance specifications.”

As a Babcock apprentice, no two days are ever the same.

“One of the biggest benefits of working in the commissioning department was how it developed my problem-solving skills. Every day presented new challenges — systems that needed troubleshooting, tests that required careful adjustment, or unexpected issues that had to be quickly diagnosed and fixed. The fast-paced environment pushed me to think on my feet and apply my technical knowledge in a very practical way.”

Learning – together.

With collaboration at our very core, as part of our team, no challenge is ever faced alone.

“I regularly worked alongside project engineers, design engineers, support engineers, facilities, and ships staff, coordinating our efforts to ensure everything came together properly. This experience has helped me develop my communication and teamwork skills, and I now have a much better understanding project management and how things are kept running smoothly across different teams.”

“Additionally, working in commissioning has allowed me to start building a network of professionals in the industry, something I know will be incredibly valuable as I move forward in my career. It’s been hugely satisfying to be part of a team that brings complex systems to life, and this experience has given me the confidence to take on bigger challenges as I continue to grow as an engineer.”
