Senior Commissioning Engineer

Name: Chris

Location: Devonport

Sector: Nuclear

Having originally joined Devonport Royal Dockyard in 1997 as an Electrical Apprentice, Chris worked as an Electrical Fitter on various surface ships and submarines, then spent two years working as a Project Engineer prior to taking a role as a Commissioning Engineer.

“The highly complex and immensely interesting work that the Commissioning Group carries out was immediately apparent to me, and right from the start I knew this was somewhere that I wanted to stay and develop my career. So, after eight enjoyable years as a Commissioning Engineer I jumped at the chance to take on the role of Senior Commissioning Engineer.”

No matter the what the engineering challenge you face at Babcock is, you’ll never be daunted – because your team will be right there beside you.

“I have held the position of Senior Commissioning Engineer for three years and have seen all aspects of commissioning on the boat, both in dock and at sea, and I am proud to be part of a highly skilled and motivated team within which I have developed both professionally and personally. I can say honestly that I enjoy my job and the work that I do immensely, even when there are long days and tight deadlines.”

Enjoying a variety of work whilst contributing to important programmes

Our work in delivering through-life support and life extension of current and future submarines involves a wide range of engineering skills and teams.

“The Commissioning Group offers the chance to work within a vastly experienced and knowledgeable team day-in-day-out and gain an in-depth insight into all aspects of the boat, its myriad of systems and the process of getting these complex platforms through their maintenance periods and returned to service safely and to a high standard.”

“I would recommend commissioning to anyone who has the desire to develop themselves in role where they can combine a love of submarine systems, problem solving and hands-on practical ability.”
