Babcock Celebrates Safety Success at RoSPA Awards

Babcock International Group (Babcock) staff are celebrating after finding out they’ve won some of the most prestigious health and safety awards in the industry.

On July 14 the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) will award Cavendish Nuclear Ltd, a subsidiary of Babcock, a Gold Medal award (its 6th consecutive Gold)  and a Gold Award for Fleet Safety at its annual Occupational Health and Safety Awards.

RoSPA will also award Babcock’s Airports business an Order of Distinction, recognising 15 consecutive years of winning a Gold Award for occupational health and safety and Babcock’s Media Services business a Gold Medal award, recognising its eighth consecutive Gold Award.

The RoSPA Awards are celebrating 60 years of presenting highly-regarded and sought after accolades to businesses and organisations which have shown commitment to accident and ill-health prevention. This year’s event will take place at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole hotel.

Through the scheme, which is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas, judges consider entrants’ overarching occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

Julia Small, RoSPA’s head of awards and events, said: “To win an award at such a highly-regarded event as the RoSPA Awards is a great achievement for our winners. It recognises their commitment to maintaining an excellent health and safety record and raises the bar for other organisations to aspire to. We offer them our congratulations.

“This year was doubly special for our winners as their achievements were recognised as the RoSPA Awards celebrated its diamond anniversary, which is a ringing endorsement of the thousands of businesses and organisations that have committed to continuous improvement in accident and ill-health prevention.”

Simon Bowen, Managing Director of Cavendish Nuclear, said: “We are delighted to win this award in recognition of our achievements over the past six years. Within Cavendish Nuclear, and within Babcock, safety is a core value underpinning everything we do. The stringent health and safety standards we set in place allow us to be able to offer everyone working for, and with us, the chance to work in a protective and safe environment.”

The majority of awards are non-competitive and mark achievement at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels. Gold medals, president’s awards and orders of distinction are presented to organisations sustaining the high standards of the gold level over consecutive years.

Competitive awards go to the best entries in 24 industry sectors including construction, healthcare, transport and logistics, engineering, manufacturing and education.

There are specialist awards for occupational health, environmental management and fleet safety, and excellence trophies for the best international, new entry, workforce involvement and organisation operating or based in Scotland. RoSPA’s top accolade is the Sir George Earle Trophy.
