Globally, The King’s Birthday Party celebrations provide fantastic opportunities to celebrate the deep and personal bond between countries and none more so than between Denmark and the UK – two countries with a shared royal heritage.
The recent event in Copenhagen served as a timely reminder of the unbreakable historic ties that exist between the two nations, where connections were celebrated, values reinforced and acknowledgement of the shared opportunities and the global challenges that the friendship faces together, today.
The Danish/UK cooperation is anchored in shared membership of major institutions such as NATO, UN, OECD, WTO, and through the 2023 UK–Denmark Joint Statement, which committed both countries to deepening cooperation in foreign policy, defence, security, technology and trade – an anchor for shared strategic interest.
As founding NATO allies, key areas of operation between the UK and Denmark include the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) – a rapid-response military force in Northern Europe – NATO operations, joint missions and close alignment on Ukraine support and European security.
With European security under increasing pressure, there is also growing focus on the Arctic and North Atlantic security, where both countries have critical interests.
The UK and Denmark are frontline defence partners, with interoperability of hardware and software increasingly crucial between allied forces. Indeed, in recent years, one of the big industrial success stories between the countries is the adoption and development by Babcock of the Danish Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates’ hull form, as the baseline design for the UK company’s proprietary Arrowhead family of multi-purpose frigates.
This is a genuine global success story, where allied navies from the UK, Poland and Indonesia are adding Arrowhead 140s to their respective defence capabilities, with a current opportunity for Denmark to join the Arrowhead family of users, bringing the future-ready product full circle. This international collaboration has similar echoes to the Patria 6×6 armoured personnel carrier – the platform of choice for the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme, a multinational cooperation that both Denmark and the UK are participating in. Babcock is Patria’s official build partner for the UK programme.
Denmark and the UK share a relationship shaped by centuries of royal connection, strengthened through enduring alliances, and defined today by close defence and security cooperation at the heart of NATO and Northern Europe. Occasions such as the King’s Birthday Party remind us of the potential to continue to grow stronger together.
