Type 31

Supply Chain

Babcock is the prime contractor and the programme lead for the Type 31 Programme, working with major suppliers like Thales, Lloyds Register, Rolls Royce, TYCO, Darchaem and L3.

The Type 31 programme will not only safeguard shipbuilding jobs, but will generate prosperity in line with the National Shipbuilding Strategy. This prosperity is achieved through the extended Supply Chain, with an emphasis on UK suppliers, both at a large company level and with small to medium Enterprises, at all tiers of the supply chain. The scale of this investment, principally in design, engineering, project management, procurement and advanced manufacturing skills, has an enduring positive impact on the UK.

Our Type 31 programme develops a UK wide supply chain. Major subcontract awards have been underway since the start of 2020 throughout the platform and combat systems, and we continue to have conversations with key suppliers about their capability to support this programme for the Royal Navy.

The Type 31 programme is expected to support an additional 1250 roles within the wider UK supply chain.

Prosperity

The UK MOD and Royal Navy worked in unison to set the Type 31 requirement and have successfully championed a new competitive procurement process – the first major warship procurement in a generation to meet this challenge.

We are confident that Type 31 will act as the pathfinder for the delivery of capability and vision set out in the National Shipbuilding Strategy to deliver a strong warship building sector in the UK for the long term, with the potential for exports and contribution to broader prosperity.

The Type 31 programme will provide social development in a number of ways, ensuring an inspirational legacy to remember, supporting local communities across multiple locations in the UK.

The programme is as much about our people as it is about the product. It will build on the successes already made by Babcock and our partner companies supporting our value for economic integrity.
