Mechanical Production Controller – FTSG

  • Name:Lorna Evans

  • Sector:Marine

I am 24 years old and have been working at Babcock for a little over two years. I have recently started my role of responsibility after spending the last two years rotating around the business on the graduate scheme. I am now a Production Controller within the Fleet Time Support Group in the Submarine Business Unit and I love it!

My trade, why I chose it and why I chose Babcock:

I chose to study Mechanical Engineering at Exeter University due to my interest in cars and technology from a young age. I am always keen to find out how things work and always helped my father when he was working on his car. I chose Babcock as I was interested in getting up close and personal to the critical and complex engineering projects they are trusted to deliver.

My Typical Day:

My typical day involves attending the ‘Plan of the Day’ meeting, where all trades meet along with project, ship staff, commissioning group and other key stakeholders to ensure that all work being carried out that day is de-conflicted, thus ensuring safety. I plan the work for the mechanical fitters, ensuring they are authorised to carry out those tasks and have all the necessary materials required. I also spend a lot of my time on board the platform, which is very interesting; no two days are the same.

My favourite part of the job:

My favourite part of the job is the challenge that each day brings! No two days are the same – some days I am solving material issues, whilst other day I can be looking at drawings or planning out work for the next day. A lot of the challenges I face mean that I have to communicate with a wide variety of people and teams and this is something I really enjoy.

Most challenging thing I’ve ever done to date:

I had to plan the work required to service a garbage ejector on one of the boats. This was a complex job, which also required me to consider containing the garbage. The project also involved various teams which meant getting a detailed plan in place was crucial. We are currently half way through the work, and I am pleased to be closely involved!

My contribution as a STEM Ambassador:

During my two years on the graduate scheme, I have been involved in various STEM activities. These range from going on visits to primary schools to deliver STEM activities, through to organising a careers fair in Dartmoor Zoo in partnership with Women in STEM Plymouth. I have enjoyed taking part in many STEM events and have felt that local young people have gained a lot from Babcock’s involvement.
