What you’ll be working on
Engineers are at the heart of everything we do
Whether you’re designing, building, maintaining or innovating, your work directly contributes to projects that protect people, support national resilience and create a safe and secure world.
We offer opportunities to solve complex challenges, work with cutting-edge technologies, and develop your skills alongside some of the most experienced professionals in the industry. If you’re looking for a career where your engineering expertise makes a real difference – Babcock is the place to be.
We play a vital role in sustaining the UK’s submarine fleet, ensuring these complex vessels remain safe, capable and ready for action
Our work spans the full lifecycle of submarine platforms. Whether it’s developing maintenance strategies, recommending system upgrades, contributing to the design of next-generation submarines or decommissioning – our engineers are solving some of the most challenging problems in naval engineering.
Much of this work is carried out through the £3.5 billion Future Maritime Support Programme. This includes through-life support and life extension for the Vanguard, Trafalgar, and Astute classes of submarines, delivered across our key sites at HMNB Clyde and HMNB Devonport, and further supported from our engineering hub in Bristol.
In addition, we are delivering a £750 million infrastructure upgrade at Devonport Dockyard to support future submarine capability. This includes modern dock facilities and logistics hubs essential for deep maintenance and nuclear defuel operations.
Looking ahead, Babcock is also contributing to the design of the next generation of nuclear submarines under the SSN-AUKUS programme, which will replace the Astute class from the late 2030s.

We’re at the forefront of modern naval engineering, delivering and sustaining the Royal Navy’s surface fleet through cutting-edge shipbuilding and comprehensive support services.
We carry out the maintenance, refit, and upgrade of the Royal Navy’s existing surface fleet, providing through-life support for a wide range of platforms, ensuring operational readiness through complex engineering, systems integration and platform modernisation.
At the heart of our shipbuilding programme is the Type 31 general purpose frigate, a next-generation warship designed to meet the evolving demands of global maritime operations. The programme is carried out at our advanced facility in Rosyth, Scotland where we use a digitally enabled build process that integrates innovation across design, procurement and assembly.
Whether it’s assembling the Royal Navy’s future frigates or extending the life of its current fleet, our engineers are shaping the future of maritime defence.

We support and enhance the British Army’s vehicle fleet at sites across the UK – delivering both cutting-edge manufacturing and dependable through-life support.
We manufacture the Jackal 3, a high-mobility, light-armoured patrol vehicle, under a major contract with the UK Ministry of Defence. Built in collaboration with Supacat, these vehicles are assembled at our Devonport facility in Plymouth, with up to 240 vehicles planned for delivery.
Through our Defence Support Group contract, we manage the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and storage of over 30,000 military vehicles – from quad bikes to main battle tanks. This work is carried out across multiple UK sites and includes complex engineering projects such as vehicle rebuilds, integration of new systems and readiness inspections.
Our teams ensure that the British Army’s vehicles are always ready for deployment – whether through rapid repair, strategic fleet management, or embedded support alongside military personnel. We deliver lifetime engineering that keeps the Army moving.
